market survey

NVF Test:

  1. Headphone pouch: this idea is novel because I couldn’t find any existing products specifically catered for this use. This idea is valuable because I felt like some of the people I interviewed in the previous assignments would be able to use this product to help them carry their belongings to the gym. This product idea is feasible because it would not be expensive to manufacture and could sell for a relatively low price as well.
  2. Carry all water bottle: this idea is novel, because while I’ve seen things in the market with a similar idea to this, I have not seen products that are manufactured in the way I envisioned this product. This idea is valuable because, like the first idea, I felt like some of the people I interviewed in the previous assignments would be able to use it. This product is feasible because I the materials required would be relatively cheap to obtain.
  3. Roll up bike bag: this idea is novel because I have not seen similar products in the market. Although there are suspended bike bags in the market, I have not seen a roll up bag. This idea is valuable because I could see people who bike to the gym using it. This product is fairly feasible because I think it would be fairly cheap and easy to make, but the ergonomics of the product would need to be refined.

At the beginning of the survey, I mentioned that these products would be used to carry personal belongings to the gym. For each product, I asked how interested the consumer was (scale of 1–5), how likely the consumer would purchase the product (scale of 1–5), and how much the consumer would pay for the product (10, 15, 20, other, wouldn’t buy it). In total, I received 37 responses.

responses for headphone pouch (left), roll up bike bag (middle), carry all water bottle (right)

Overall, my market survey gave me a good insight of what possible consumers would actually want to purchase. If I ranked these three products based on decreasing customer interest, the products would be ranked as: carry all water bottle, headphone pouch, and roll up bike bag.

benchmarking 2x2s and patent search

  1. Headphone pouch

Patent search: clip pouch

https://patents.google.com/patent/USD423211S/en?q=clip&q=pouch&oq=clip+on+pouch

no abstract listed, but this is the closest patent I could find to my product idea. The clip pouch is kind of the same idea as what I was envisioning, and it would be able to attach to the headphone cord.

2. Roll up bike bag

Patent search: Suspension bicycle bag

https://patents.google.com/patent/US6253979B1/en?q=bike&q=bag&oq=bike+bag

abstract:

“A carrying device for mounting on a bicycle. The bicycle has a frame constructed of a plurality of frame members that define an open area. The device is comprised of a bag having opposing side walls and having a shape that permits the bag to be positioned within the open area. The device also comprises an elastic connector for connecting the bag to the frame members whereby the bag is suspendable in the open area”

3. Carry all water bottle

Patent search: Beverage bottle with accessible station for portable electronic device

https://patents.google.com/patent/US9420907B2/en?q=water&q=bottle&q=wallet&oq=water+bottle+wallet

abstract:

“A beverage bottle for a portable electronic device, includes a hand-held container comprising a surrounding wall and having a fluid compartment formed within the surrounding wall, and an accessible station integrated with the hand-held container, wherein the accessible station has a window cavity for accommodating the portable electronic device therein so as to allow the portable electronic device through the window cavity. Therefore, the portable electronic device is carried and protected by the container and is accessible through the accessible station”

feasibility concerns

  1. Headphone pouch: the main concerns for this product will be if it can hold enough, and if the pouch will weigh down on the headphones and cause problems relating to earbuds staying in.
  2. Roll up bike bag: the main concern for this product is if ergonomically it will still allow the user to bike properly (will the bag be too bulky and get in the way of pedaling?)
  3. Carry all water bottle: the main concern for this product is if the elastic strips will be strong enough to hold heavier objects (a phone), and if the elastic strips will be secure enough to keep all of the objects held in.

pugh chart

From this pugh chart, I will be continuing with the carry all water bottle idea.

sketch model + feedback

This is the rough model I made for the carry all water bottle. I used cardboard strips instead of elastic, but this is the rough idea.

Prototype and prototype holding some belongings

I asked my roommate to test out this prototype. She mentioned that she was a bit skeptical of the idea when I was describing it, but when she actually tested it out she could see herself actually using it when going to the gym.

timeline:

10/31: make survey

11/01: survey ppl, collect data and graph

11/02: do benchmarking/pugh chart

11/03: patent search and sketch models

11/04: finish sketching, start blog post

11/07: finish blog post
